Demolishing retail buildings in the busy centre of Spijkenisse

About the project

At the Kolkplein in Spijkenisse, DCC demolished a retail complex consisting of several shops. The retail area is making way for a residential district. Prior to demolition, we carried out an asbestos survey, followed by an extensive asbestos removal operation.

Because this was a busy shopping area, we consulted extensively with the municipality, the adjacent shopkeepers and local residents throughout the project.

Traffic safely rerouted

The old retail buildings stood in the middle of Spijkenisse town centre, along a busy road and close to a cycle path. To guarantee safety, several traffic flows had to be rerouted. In consultation with the client, we drew up a traffic plan, which was approved by the municipality.

Shops kept receiving deliveries

The nearby shops stayed open throughout the project — and therefore had to be stocked. Delivery trucks had to pass straight through the demolition area to do so. One of our employees was therefore always on hand to escort them safely through the work area. That way, deliveries to the shops were never at risk.

Materials got a second life

On this project too, we gave many materials and rubble a second life. The released timber was sorted and will be reused after treatment, and all the dismantled glass has been redeployed on another project. All the rubble from the demolition was crushed into recycled aggregate and taken directly to a nearby construction project — keeping transport to a minimum as well. Tight schedule, every deadline met

Where a demolished site often lies idle for a while, this project was different: construction of the new homes started immediately after demolition. In fact, other contractors were already starting their work during ours. We therefore worked in phases, with limited space. That made the project challenging — but every deadline was met and the client was satisfied.
