In May 2018, the demolition of a double-deck floating tank roof was on our agenda. This 500-ton roof, with a diameter of 83 meters, was part of major maintenance at the Maasvlakte and was beyond repair. The roof was therefore in need of replacement to meet all the stringent safety requirements again.
A tight deadline
Because we have demolished several tank roofs in the past, we were able to agree on a tight deadline. On Friday, we finished demolishing, disposing of and leaving the work area clean, so that work on installing a new roof could begin on Monday.
How did we approach this project?
To remove all the demolished parts from the roof to the outside, an entrance was made on the side of the tank. This allowed us to drive a large flat cart into the tank to collect all the demolished parts with it.
To systematically dismantle the roof, we climbed onto the tank roof with fall protection and first burned a large circle out of the center of the roof. After this part of the roof was removed, we started to systematically demolish the roof - according to a snail shell pattern - in parts.
What did we have to consider?
The roof of the tank was the only part in need of replacement. The bottom had already been replaced for a new bottom. It was therefore important not to damage the bottom and the tank itself. Careful work was therefore necessary. We cut all the waste material from the roof outside the tank to container size with the crawler crane with scissors and then loaded it into scrap containers. The work took a total of 6 weeks. We could again say with confidence: Your project, efficiently executed.
